What to know about Threads - Meta's Challenger to Twitter's Dominance

Instagram is attempting to capitalize on the disarray that Elon Musk's reign over Twitter has created. Your phones might soon receive the new thread app from the Meta-owned platform.

It’s a good time for Instagram to enter the fray — this past weekend, as Twitter fumbled the bag with rate-limit errors, competitors like Spill, Bluesky and Post saw significant growth. But Threads could have a leg up, since it directly ports over your Instagram followers and following lists. Instead of rebuilding a community from scratch, Threads users will already have their existing Instagram circles there from the get-go.

Threads offers an alternative social media experience, inviting users to share short messages with a wider audience and interact with others through comments and replies. The platform's intuitive design, akin to Twitter's format, facilitates seamless communication and information dissemination. Meta's emphasis on building vibrant communities and fostering engagement suggests Threads will be a noteworthy contender for Twitter's user base.

Your Threads profile is strongly connected to your Instagram profile. The two use the same username and display name, and it seems your Threads profile picture may have to be from Instagram. Additionally, anyone you block on one service is also blocked on the other.

- Your name and username are synced with Instagram and can only be changed there.

- Your profile photo is verified and can only be changed on Instagram.

While Threads introduces exciting features, questions arise regarding user privacy. The app's privacy policy reveals potential data collection, including health and fitness information, financial data, contact details, search history, and more. This policy has drawn criticism from privacy advocates, highlighting the need for transparent data practices and user control. In comparison, Twitter's privacy policy primarily revolves around data collected during platform use, direct user input, and third-party data sources.

Threads is originally scheduled to launch on July 6, according to an App Store listing for the application. In addition to its listing on the iPhone marketplace, Threads briefly showed up on the Google Play Store last week with screenshots and details similar to what the App Store listing shows now. Moreover, some users claim to have seen a different listing for Threads on Google Play that is still live but does not have a launch date mentioned. That means the company is planning to introduce Threads’ Android app around the same time.
